šŸ¤– ChatGPT and the EU Need Therapy

OpenAI thought they were in the clear after Italy reapproved ChatGPT — but that might have been wishful thinking.

The EU is planning to announce the AI Act which will be the world’s first rules on Artificial Intelligence.

  • The act includes bans on biometric surveillance, emotion recognition, and predictive policing systems.

Here’s the catch: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said ā€œthe current draft of the EU AI Act would be over-regulatingā€ — and so, the company might remove ChatGPT access in the EU

Representatives of the Parliament, the Council, and the Commission will soon hash out the final details of the AI Act — although, Altman is optimistic the EU will ultimately lessen the restrictions.

Meanwhile, Altman and other industry leaders met with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak šŸ‘€

 šŸ“ˆ NVIDIA is (Really) Valuable

We said it last week, and we’re doubling down on the statement: AI companies might be recession proof.

Thanks to chips being a hot commodity during the AI boom, NVIDIA (NVDA) jumped 24% on Thursday and now has a market value of nearly $940 billion.

  • NVIDIA is now the fifth-most valuable US company behind Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon.

What makes NVIDIA special?

NVIDIA went from specializing in games and graphics hardware to betting on AI chips…and it has clearly paid off.

The company’s $10,000 chip, the A100, is configured at machine learning tasks — and is the workhorse behind a ton of players in the AI industry, such as Google, Meta, and Microsoft.

Training an AI model requires lots of chips. For example, Stability AI, the company behind AI image generation, went from 32 A100s last year to over 5,400.

Recently, NVIDIA announced its most powerful chip, the H100 — which has been selling on eBay for over $40,000.

🩺 AI Has Massively Improved Healthcare

It’s no secret that AI has its benefits, and that’s most evident in the healthcare industry. So today, we want to share two incredible stories.

In 2011, Gert-Jan Oskam was left paralyzed from the waist down after a motorcycle accident.

In 2022, researchers in Switzerland inserted electronic implants in the areas of Oskam's brain and spinal cord that control movement. Then, the researchers used AI to build what they called a "digital bridge" between his brain and spine.

The AI intuitively understands Oskam’s intentions, and uses the ā€œdigital bridgeā€ to help him ā€œmove around independentlyā€.

Researchers in the US have been searching for a compound to kill a deadly superbug called Acinetobacter baumannii which infects wounds and cause pneumonia.

Through AI, the researchers reduced a list of 6,680 potential antibiotics down to 240. From there, they discovered the antibiotic abaucin successfully eliminated the superbug.

By 2030, we may see abaucin used worldwide, which would be especially helpful for patients and staff in hospitals and carehomes — where the superbug seems to thrive, according to bbc.com.
