🍎 Apple Leaves Meta in the Dust

After years in the making, Apple has announced its new mixed reality headset. Vision Pro - which is controlled by a user’s eyes, hands, and voice - is packed with features:

  • Apple’s first 3D camera: lets users see spatial photos and videos in 3D.

  • A fully immersive experience: turn any room into a movie theater, personal computer, …or a life-sized Facetime call.

  • EyeSight: Vision Pro reveals your eyes and allows you to see others nearby.

There’s more: Apple and Disney have partnered to bring Disney Plus and “deeply personal experiences” to Vision Pro. Disney CEO Bob Iger teased the idea of watching a basketball game in 3D and joining a National Geographic adventure from home.

What about Meta?

Last year, Meta’s AR/VR department (Reality Labs) lost $13.7 billion. Despite this, Mark Zuckerberg announced the company’s high-end headset, Meta Quest Pro, at the end of 2022.

How does it compare it Vision Pro?

1. Less expensive: Apple’s headset costs $3,499, while Meta’s costs $1,499.

2. More attachments: Meta requires handheld controllers, while Apple’s does not.

🚨 AI Eliminated (A LOT OF) Jobs

If you were wondering when AI will replace humans, well it’s already happened.

According to a report from Challenger, Gray & Christmas, AI caused 4,000 job losses last month in the US.

  • US-based employers announced just over 80,000 layoffs in May, a 20% increase from the month prior and a 287% increase from May of last year. Of the roughly 8,000, about 5% were caused by advancements in AI.

There’s more: Two months ago, Goldman Sachs reported that AI could replace 300 million full-time jobs in the next decade — while also yielding a $7 trillion increase in global GDP

🩺 Carbon Health Launches AI Charting Tool

AI hasn’t replaced doctors just yet, but it has made their job easier.

Carbon Health launched a GPT-4-based notes assistant called hands-free-charting, removing the need for a doctor to manually summarize a patient’s visit.

How it works: Hands-free-charting records and transcribes the audio of a patient’s visit. Based on the data in Carbon Health’s EHR (electronic health records system) — such as a patient’s history, diagnosis codes, etc. — the AI uses the audio to generate a summary of the visit in a few minutes.

Why it matters: Manual note-taking is a leading cause of burnout for doctors, and given that there’s a global physician shortage, it’s crucial to help make a doctor’s job easier.
